The NIE is a number. The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is a physical card issued to non-EU residents that carries that number and proves your residency status. EU citizens get a green registration certificate rather than a TIE.

The padrón is your town hall's register of residents. Being registered is what gives you access to a local health centre, a school place, and many administrative procedures. It is also how the municipality counts you for its budget, which is why town halls want you registered.

We cannot jump a queue, but we know which offices have availability, which procedures can be done online, and which documents cause an appointment to be wasted. That is usually the difference between three weeks and three months.

For tax filings, payroll and company formation, generally yes. We work alongside gestores and lawyers and coordinate the process; we do not charge a markup on their fees.

Generally when you spend more than 183 days in Spain in a calendar year, or when your main economic interests are here. Tax residency is decided by the facts, not by whether you registered, so plan it rather than discover it.

Autónomo is Spain's self-employment status. It carries a monthly social security contribution based on your projected earnings, with reduced rates in the first years for new registrations. The exact bands change, so we confirm the current figure for your income level when we scope the work.

Sometimes — through an employer of record, or by registering as a foreign employer with Spanish social security. Which is appropriate depends on headcount, permanence and the risk of creating a permanent establishment. It is worth taking advice before the first hire, not after the fifth.

Prices vary sharply by neighbourhood and have risen steeply in recent years, with the centre and the beachfront areas the most expensive. Rather than quote a figure that will be out of date, we give you current asking prices for your specific criteria when you enquire.

Yes — British, American, German and French curricula are all available in the province, alongside Spanish public and concertado schools. Places at the popular international schools are limited and applications open well in advance.

In Málaga city, usually not: the centre is walkable, the metro and bus network cover most of it, and the coastal train runs to the airport and along the western coast. Outside the city, and especially inland, a car becomes hard to avoid.

Andalusian public healthcare is good and, once you are entitled to it, essentially free at the point of use. Waiting times for non-urgent specialists are the usual complaint, which is why many residents keep private insurance alongside it.
